Where Tradition meets trendsetting Vibes: Why you should love the Lend too!

Farmers’ market during the day, trendy meeting place in the evening. Welcome to the creative district of Graz: The Lend borders Graz city center and is considered “the place to be”.

Good to know

The name Lend comes from the verb “anlenden”, which means “to lay out” and this in turn comes from the fact that there used to be shipping traffic on the River Mur here.

Since Graz was named Capital of Culture in 2013, Lend has also benefited from the city’s upswing and has been considered a trendy district ever since.

Side fact: Lend is the 4th district in Graz and is located on the right bank of the Mur. It belongs to the inner-city area. The district is the third smallest in terms of area, but the most densely populated district. There are a total of 17 districts in Graz. Andritz is the largest district in terms of area and the inner city the smallest. The Ries has the fewest inhabitants per square kilometer.

The Lend district of Graz is not only home to the Kunsthaus and its popular café, but also to numerous creative people, who can be found mainly between Mariahilferplatz and Lendplatz. You will find numerous design stores, co-working spaces, cozy cafés and cool restaurants in the area. Don’t know where to go with so much on offer? Discover favorite spots around Lendplatz in Graz. And guess what? There’s also a green side: The spaces in the Volksgarten are perfect for picnics.

Good morning farmers’ market!

From Monday to Saturday, you can buy food from local farmers here from 6 am to 1 pm. Help yourself to the seasonal fruit and vegetables, bread and pastries, vinegar, oil, meat products and plants on offer. But what makes the market on Lendplatz one of the favorite places in Graz are the fixed market stalls that invite you to eat, drink and linger.

Culinary delights on the square

At Lenz im Lend, for example, you can enjoy market rolls in the morning, take a break from everyday life with coffee and cake or toast with a glass of Gelber Muskateller in the evening. We also like to make a detour to Im Glaserl am Lend, where you can enjoy Styrian delicacies by the glass, wines from the region, beer or Prosecco. Don’t froget to check the gift shop in the Kunsthaus!

Kunsthaus Graz

The Hungry Heart

Perhaps the most charming snack bar and takeaway in the area offers fast food as we (don’t) know it. But it tastes twice as good. Plus: There are also sweets to snack on.

Steirastubn

At the Steirerstubn we work exclusively with regional products: Eggs, bread and vegetables fresh from the market and our meat from local farmers – only the best ingredients and raw materials are used. Enjoy Styria on your plate – and you will never forget it.

Imbiss Hauser

Legendary since 1907: the Hauser Imbiss – a snack bar on the north side of the Markthalle – is a childhood memory for many people in Graz and a cult meeting place for good reason. Here you can get Würstel  and Zirbenschnaps. Cheers!

Die Scherbe

Right next door you will find one of the all-time favorites in Graz: the restaurant Die Scherbe is a true all-rounder. It serves breakfast, lunch during the week and an evening menu with international dishes from 5 pm – from Thai curry to egg sandwiches.

The Scherbe is not only a restaurant, but also a bar and event venue: concerts, readings, poetry slams and other cultural events regularly take place in the Scherbenkeller or even in front of the building – making this cool place a meeting point for all those interested in culture.

Lendwirbel

Spring is always the right time to remember the Lendwirbel: the street and neighborhood festival takes place once a year, usually in May. The events do not take place exclusively on Lendplatz – but that doesn’t matter.

You can expect exhibitions, performances, concerts and discussions, as well as workshops, meditations and poetry slams. If you would like to help shape the district together, you can also contact the Lendwirbel association to get involved.

Managerie

Forget beautifully designed shop windows. This is even more exciting: Managerie Kiosk sells all kinds of things directly in the shop window. Here you can find beautiful designs – from jewelry to decorations for the home – as well as crêpes and drinks to take away. Managerie is not just a kiosk, but also a co-working space and project management company. You can’t miss it!

ppc

Want to turn night into day? Then you’ll find a fixed star in Graz’s nightlife sky just a few steps away: the ppc awaits you in Neubaugasse with lots of clubbing, concerts and other events. Here you can listen to indie concerts, shake at the semester opening or dance to DJ sets. From the 80s to the 10s, all musical eras are celebrated on two floors. Throw yourself into the hustle and bustle until the ppc washes you back onto Lendplatz early in the morning.

Lendplatz at night

While the tables are used for sales on market days, they are used in the evening by visitors who want to make themselves comfortable with a drink in their hand. Lendplatz is transformed into a trendy meeting place.

Friday evenings are particularly busy. When the sun comes out more often in spring and pleasant temperatures beckon, Landplatz becomes a trendy meeting place. Students, skaters and after-work groups, singers, dancers … meet up and end the day with a chat and a drink.
