The Styrian capital has eight universities and a comprehensive range of courses, which is really something to be proud of. You can choose between four universities, two technical colleges and two teacher training colleges:

  • University of Applied Sciences, also called FH Campus 02
  • Joanneum University of Applied Sciences
  • University of Education Styria
  • Ecclesiastical University of Education of the Diocese of Graz-Seckau

Free time in Graz

One thing is clear: The range of leisure activities in and around Graz lures you out at any time of the year. While a visit to the galleries, exhibitions and museums is always a good idea, you will particularly appreciate the Mur Promenade in summer. If you want to cool off on particularly hot days, pay a visit to the Schwarzlsee, south of the city limits, and plunge into the cool water. A trip to one of the many wine bars a short distance from Graz is also a good idea.

Sports fans get their money’s worth in Graz. If you want to keep fit in everyday life, you can go jogging in the Leechwald or on the Mur Promenade, for example, or take trips by bike. The University of Graz also offers its own sports courses. If you like it a little wilder, explore one of the mountain bike tours on the Schöckl, Graz’s local mountain.

Here you can also hike over 40 kilometers, prove your physical abilities in the Motorikpark and admire Graz from above while paragliding. If you don’t want to go that high, but still want to get a taste of mountain air, visit the climbing park right next to the valley station of the cable car. But even in winter there is a lot for you to discover. Styria has an incredibly large selection of ski areas.

Student jobs in Graz

With a parttime job during your studies, you can gain valuable professional experience. You can also use it to top up your piggy bank or even finance your studies. You can find current advertisements on the usual job and career portals in Austria. In addition, the Career Center of the University of Graz will help you if you are looking for the right job during your studies or are planning your career start. Another positive aspect: In a city like Graz there are plenty of opportunities to earn money.

For the vast majority of students, money plays a major role and is often cause for sleepless nights. In addition to the apartment, there are also groceries, leisure activities and one or the other insurance to be paid for. Fortunately, the alpine country offers various financial assistance, scholarships and other support during your studies. Shopping in Graz

Proximity to the countryside is noticeable in Graz. In addition to the usual supermarket chains, you will find many smaller organic shops or farmers markets with healthy delicacies from the area. If you value sustainability, you should stop by the Kaiser-Josef market in downtown Graz. From here you can also start larger shopping tours through the friendly old town.

The inexpensive lunch menus in the city’s canteens are more than convenient for many students. In addition, many a restaurant offers a lucrative student discount or a cheap menu for smaller budgets. This way, eating out doesn’t have to be a rare treat.

Transportation in Graz

If you want to get from A to B quickly, get a bike. In the most bicycle-friendly city in Austria, this is almost mandatory! Alternatively, you can also use public transport. These include more than 20 bus connections, several tram lines and some train routes. However, if you mainly travel by public transport, you should get the student card or the Top Ticket.

Graz is a student city. For this reason, an exciting nightlife awaits you – even during the week! One of the most important party locations is the university district, where you can immerse yourself in the nightlife after studying. If you like live music and love jazz, you shouldn’t miss Miles. Here you can even attend many concerts for a voluntary donation. And at the end of the summer semester, a special highlight awaits you: the USI Festival with more than 20,000 revelers.
