Vienna’s Newest Bites: Where to Eat, Sip & Stay Awhile

Vienna is famous for its imperial charm, world-class museums, and coffeehouse culture that borders on sacred. But there’s something else quietly brewing between the cobblestones and concert halls: a new wave of restaurants, cafés, and bars that are shaking things up in the best possible way.

La Mezcaleria – Small, Strong, and Full of Spirit

For fans of Mexican cuisine done right, La Mezcaleria delivers a compact, detail-rich dining experience. It’s a small space in Neubau, and the menu focuses on classic Mexican breakfast and lunch dishes like chilaquiles, huevos rancheros, and tacos with handmade tortillas.

But what makes it stand out? Mezcal. A curated selection of small-batch bottles dominates the drink list. Expect smoky aromas, spiced salt rims, and staff who know their stuff. The bar team is trained to offer tasting flights and explain the regional differences between mezcal types.

This is not a party bar — it’s a slow-sipping, flavor-deep dive into Mexican culinary tradition. And with warm lighting, terracotta colors, and handpicked ceramics, the design is just as thoughtful.

Hi Vegan – Plant-Based Vietnamese with Garden Vibes

Not all vegan places get it right — Hi Vegan does. Located close to Meidling station, this spot is an offshoot of the already popular Hi Asia and focuses on traditional Vietnamese recipes, reimagined entirely without animal products.

On the menu: steaming bowls of vegan pho, crisp Banh Mi, spring rolls with tofu and jackfruit, and larger bowls with marinated seitan or soy-based “chicken.” Every item is clearly labeled for allergens and designed for balance — flavor over gimmick.

The real win here is the hidden garden terrace in the back, which offers shaded seating in warmer months. The prices are moderate (most mains fall between €9–13), and portions are generous. Hi Vegan works equally well for weekday lunches or weekend slow-downs.

Diegos Street Food Napoletano – A Slice of Naples in the 7th

The idea is simple: bring the essence of Naples to Vienna’s 7th district, minus the cliché. Diegos doesn’t aim to be fancy — it wants to be right. Street-food staples like calamari fritti, pizza al taglio, arancini, and zeppole (Neapolitan donuts) line the counter, while cornetto and espresso offer an authentic southern Italian breakfast vibe.

Pricing is student- and lunch-break–friendly. A proper slice of pizza starts around 2 Euro, a classic espresso goes for 1 Euro. The space is clean and compact with a few seats, and the staff serves quickly without sacrificing warmth. All items are prepared in-house, and the cornetto (especially the one filled with pistachio cream) has already gained a loyal fan base.

Pizza Ribelle – Pizza That Parties

Pizza Ribelle redefines what a pizza place can be. Tucked into the venue of Club Praterstraße, this spot doubles as a hangout before or after dancing. The concept: high-quality, stone-baked pizza paired with natural wines, small plates, and DJ beats later in the evening.

The open kitchen creates a direct connection between guests and chefs, and the menu is deliberately lean: a few seasonal pizzas, one or two desserts, and rotating toppings with top-quality ingredients (like smoked burrata, pickled chili, or fennel sausage).

It’s more than dinner — it’s a scene, but without pretense. By night, the lights dim and the crowd blends seamlessly into the surrounding club. It’s not unusual to see tables of artists, designers, and creatives using the space as both pregame and palate cleanser.

Coffee Club 1130 – Hietzing’s Cozy Newcomer

This new café fills a long-standing gap in the quieter 13th district, which — while beautiful — isn’t exactly known for cutting-edge coffee. Founded by local barista Caroline, Coffee Club 1130 focuses on clean, reliable brews without unnecessary flair.

The espresso is smooth and moderately strong; cappuccinos are poured with practiced hands. Expect Austrian pastries alongside international basics like banana bread and croissants. Seating is limited but well-lit, with a few cozy corners for studying or catching up. There’s no elaborate brunch menu, but the simplicity is part of the charm. This is a neighborhood café in the truest sense: walk-ins, regulars, and easy conversation across tables.
