A schöne Leich: Halloween in Vienna 2026 Is to Die For

On 31 October, Vienna swaps ball gowns for vampire capes. The city that runs its own funeral museum and sings fondly about “a schöne Leich” (a beautiful corpse) has always had a soft spot for the macabre. Halloween simply gives it permission to show off.

In 2026, the spooky night lands on a Saturday, so grab your flatmates, pick a costume and choose your level of fear: lying in a real coffin, walking through cellars 15 metres underground, or dancing until the sun comes up. All dates, prices and addresses below are checked for this year.

What’s this all about?

Every Halloween event in Vienna worth your costume in 2026, from free family afternoons and a 5 km zombie run to underground legends and all-night parties.

Important facts summarized:

Prater | Halloween Without the Parade

Let’s start with the bad news: there’s no Halloween parade in the Prater this year. The good news: instead of three days, the Wurstelprater now runs five days of free Halloween fun. Expect pumpkin carving, face painting, magic shows, a hands-on circus and stilt walkers roaming the park. Kids in costume even get into the bouncy castle world for free.

No kids? No problem. Head to the Prater Alm on 31 October: come in costume and you get a free “Creepy Punsch” (with or without alcohol, while stocks last).

Where: Wurstelprater, Riesenradplatz, 1020 Vienna
When: 27 – 31 October 2026, daily 2 pm – 5 pm, free entry

Vienna Halloween Run | Zombies on the Hauptallee

Running is scary enough. Running next to werewolves, vampires and a guy with an axe glued to his head? Even better. At the Vienna Halloween Run, the Prater Hauptallee turns into a spooky race track with distances from 600 m for little monsters to 5 km for grown-up ghouls. Costumes aren’t a must, but the wildest outfit in every race wins a Style Award.

Where: Prater Hauptallee / Antifaschismusplatz 1 (Praterzelt), 1020 Vienna
When: Friday, 30 October 2026, races start between 4:40 pm and 7:30 pm. Online registration closed on 26 October, so check the official site for any remaining spots.

Zentralfriedhof | Try Out a Coffin

Only in Vienna. At the Funeral Museum at the Central Cemetery, Halloween means a riddle rally for the whole family, goodie bags and, for the brave ones, lying down in a real coffin. Spooky, funny and very, very Viennese.

Where: Zentralfriedhof, Simmeringer Hauptstraße 234, Hall 2, 1110 Vienna
When: 31 October 2026, 4 pm – 8 pm, free (donations welcome). Children only with an adult.

Underground Vienna | Ghost Tour 15 Metres Deep

Ready to go lower? On Halloween night, night watchman Willibald leads you through huge historic cellars up to 15 metres below the city, lit only by old bunker lanterns. Choose between three tours: executioners and Vienna’s darker history (5 pm), alchemists and mystical legends (7 pm) or the creepy midnight tour through the underground (10:30 pm).

Where: Meeting point at the playground in Arne-Karlsson-Park, 1090 Vienna
When: 31 October 2026, 5 pm, 7 pm and 10:30 pm, €34

Planetarium | Cosmic Horrors for €5

Not into fake blood? The Planetarium next to the Giant Ferris Wheel serves up something scarier: the universe. The “Cosmic Horrors” Halloween special runs in short 30-minute shows all evening, so it’s easy to fit in before a party.

Where: Planetarium Wien, Oswald-Thomas-Platz 1, 1020 Vienna
When: 31 October 2026, shows every half hour from 6:30 pm to 10 pm, €5

Halloween Horror Night at the Urania

Want the full package in one place? The Halloween Horror Night at the Urania by the Danube Canal combines a haunted house on the KLYO rooftop terrace, a spooky three-course dinner, a horror film in the Urania cinema and a big party in the roof hall.

Where: KLYO / Urania, Uraniastraße 1, 1010 Vienna
When: 31 October 2026, from 5:30 pm, tickets via the event website

Tips for Halloween in Vienna

  • Use the night U-Bahn. On Friday and Saturday nights, the U-Bahn runs around the clock, so you can get home safely, costume and all.
  • Shop your costume early. Most shops are closed on Sunday, 1 November (All Saints’ Day). Saturday is your last chance for last-minute fake blood.
  • Stay in the 2nd district. Prater, Planetarium and the Run are all within walking distance of each other, which makes Leopoldstadt the easiest base for a Halloween weekend. Curious what life is like in the other parts of town?
  • Keep the creepy mood going. Halloween is over in one night, but the city’s darker side is open all year: Vienna’s coolest museums are a great rainy-day plan for November.
  • Respect All Saints’ Day. On 1 November, many Viennese visit graves of loved ones. Keep the costumes and the noise away from cemeteries that day.

Conclusion

Few cities treat death with as much humour as Vienna, and Halloween is when that humour comes out to play. Whether you scream, laugh or dance your way through the night is up to you. One Saturday, plenty of goosebumps, zero reasons to stay on the sofa.
