Vienna study grant: Financial Support for students

Vienna is enchanting and especially popular with students. Students often love it so much that they sometimes forget to actually study in the Austrian capital. But besides studying at the university, don’t forget that you might be entitled to the Vienna study grant and potentially save some money!

We have researched the key facts and figures for you regarding financial support.

Basic information on the Vienna study grant

In principle, according to Austrian law, your parents are obliged to finance your education until you are able to support yourself or obtain your degree. But what if your own resources are not enough to pay the costs associated with your studies? This is when the study grant can come to your assistance under certain conditions:

  • Social eligibility: The income, marital status and family size of the student, their parents, spouse or registered partner are crucial.
  • Fulfilment of positive academic success: Positive academic success means that the student pursues his or her studies with determination, does not significantly exceed the scheduled study period and provides evidence of their successful completion of courses and exams.
  • Studies commenced before the age of 30: Austrian citizens, as well as foreign nationals and stateless persons of equal status are entitled to the study grant.

This includes:

  • EEA citizens: Equally whether you or one of your parents are “migrant workers” or if you have already been sufficiently “integrated into the Austrian educational or social system” before beginning your studies.
  • Third country citizens: Applies if you have acquired the right of permanent residence.
  • Stateless persons: In order to be treated equally, you have to have been subject to unlimited income tax in Austria with one of your parents at least five years before the start of your studies.
  • Convention refugees: Require proof of refugee status (passport, notification).

People can receive the study grant if they…

  • are regular students at Austrian universities and universities of the arts.
  • are students at a theological institute located in Austria.
  • are regular students at Austrian universities of applied sciences.
  • are regular students at Austrian public or recognised private teacher training colleges.
  • are regular students at academies with public rights.
  • are students at medical-technical academies and midwifery academies.

Submission deadlines, additional income limit & amount of financial support

Submission deadlines are always the same every year: From September 20 to December 15 for the winter semester and from February 20 to May 15 for the summer semester. Click here for the online application for the study grant.

The income limit was € 10,000 / year until autumn 2020, but has been increased to € 15,000 / year. This means that students can earn more in addition to their education without losing the grant. If you exceed the income limit of € 15,000 per year, the study grant will be reduced by this amount.

Since autumn 2020 students can earn up to € 15,000 / year in addition to the study grant!

So be careful. Your income is checked annually, but it makes no difference how much you earn on vacation or internships, it is only the annual limit that must not be exceeded.

The Vienna study grant is paid monthly and is at least € 5 per month. The maximum study grant, in turn, is € 8,580 per year. It is precisely because of this wide range of fluctuation that it is important to seek advice.
